Higher Ground

The world speaks in colors, my heart answers in music.
~Rabindranath Tagore~

Auld Lang Syne has come and gone, leaving 2012 wrapped in swaddling clothes at our doorstep. Speculations have given rise to a number of beliefs and anxieties surrounding the future of this youngster long before his arrival. Without any doubt, there is palpable energy and distinct sweet fragrance wafting in the air. What might it be? Intuition tells me that a higher consciousness is being awakened throughout our globe.

Yesterday, while many spent time recovering from the prior night’s celebrations or watching NFL, I indulged in a full day of OWN TV in my pajamas. My family gifted me with this quality ‘Me Time’ by staying out of my way and later catering to me in bed with the traditional New Years meal, a bowl of homemade black eyed peas and made-from-scratch low sugar banana pudding. Dr. Oz, you’d be proud of them for placing such care over their recipe and of me for eating what improves my health.

As Oprah revealed her new series, Oprah’s Next Chapter, I found inspiration coming from the most unsuspecting character, Steven Tyler, lead singer of Aerosmith. I was really drawn to his high level of energy and the authenticity with which he delivered his message. After observing him for a while, I noticed that on various occasions he harmonized a tune and in those moments one could connect with his passion for music. Steven’s enthusiasm ticked a string on my human guitar, as I too find myself being attracted to music as a form of expression and even spill lyrics across many of my writings, including my book. Music is the universal language of the heart. Toward the end of the show, he took Oprah to his “sacred” place, a spot in the woods tucked away, and nestled by robust trees and a thick, lush patch of moss sprinkled with dainty mushrooms. They sat on the ground and he expressed that this is where the music happens, Oprah concluded by saying, “God IS the music.”

Earlier in the day I had marveled at the work of Tom Shadyac and his documentary entitled I AM. Tom’s exposé left me in awe of the possibilities and firmly declaring my mission once more. “To aid in empowering every child by teaching them to recognize their own innate beauty,” with the ultimate vision being, “To uncover the transcendent spirit in every one of us.” It takes the work of every one of us to incarnate visions across the world, beckoning consciousness. I ask that you seek your own vision in the depths of your soul, and determine your role in the greater path of our humanity. Join me as I sing to the glow and stillness of this new year’s light for strength and insight.

Walk me over

this horizon

let the sun’s light

warm my face

once again the times are changin’

once again I’ve lost my way

While the words of ancient poets

fall like dust upon my shoes

greed has robbed me of my vision

turned my heart from higher truths

So take my hand

and lift me higher

be my love and my desire

hold me safe

and honor bound

take my heart to

higher ground

I have walked

too long in darkness

I have walked

too long alone

blindly clutching

fists of diamonds

that I found were only stones

I would trade the world of ages

for a warmer hand to hold

the path of light is narrow

but it leads to streets of gold

So take my hand

and lift me higher

be my love and my desire

hold me safe

and honor bound

take my heart to

higher ground

In this world

we move through shadows

never sure

of what we see

while the truth abides between us

come and share the truth with me

So take my hand

and lift me higher

be my love and my desire

hold me safe

and honor bound

take my heart to

higher

higher ground
